Rise in H1N1 deaths causes concern

Toll touches 18 in State; B'luru accounts for nine cases

The rising deaths due to swine flu (H1N1) has caused concern among the people of the State.

Jayalakshmi, 78, died of the disease at Sri Krishna Sevashrama on February 7. But it was only on Monday that it was confirmed to be a case of H1N1. The death toll in the State has gone up to 18 since January, including nine in the city alone.

In the last three days, three deaths have been confirmed as due to swine flu. The victims are Shobha, 45, from Priyadarshini Layout, Shabir Ahmed, 50, and Manjula, 46, from Shastrinagar.

The total number of positive cases in the BBMP limits is 139, according to the BBMP Health department.

According to officials from the Department of Health and Family Welfare, as on Monday, 1,057 samples were tested in the State and 285 H1N1 cases have been confirmed.

In Mysuru

A 45-year-old woman succumbed to swine flu at BGS Apollo Hospital in Mysuru on Sunday. The deceased is Geetha of Ramabai Nagar near J P Nagar. Geetha was shifted to Apollo recently, after she was treated for some time at another hospital in the city.

The death was confirmed by District Health Officer Dr H T Puttaswamy at the Karnataka Development Programme progress review meeting in the city. He informed Revenue and district in-charge Minister V Sreenivas Prasad, who chaired the meeting, that starting from January till now, 17 suspected cases were reported in Mysuru. Of these, 12 are from Mysuru district and five from other districts. Three cases have been confirmed positive.

In Bidar

A 32-year-old woman from Marakal village in Bidar taluk died of H1N1 (swine flu) on Sunday morning.

The victim is Geetha. District Health and Family Welfare Officer Madan Vaijinath said that after Geetha tested positive for H1N1, she was given treatment at a private hospital in Bidar. She was later shifted to Hyderabad for advanced care, but died on Sunday, Vaijinath said.

In Vijayapura

Najibunnisa S Syed, 59, died of H1N1 at a private hospital in Vijayapura on Thursday. But doctors confirmed that she had died of the disease only on Monday.

She was admitted to a private hospital on February 10 (Tuesday) and her blood samples were sent for testing to Manipal Hospital on the same day. However, she passed away on February 12, even before the test results arrived.

District Surveillance Officer Dr S Shankarappa told Deccan Herald that the test results had confirmed that the woman was infected with H1N1. This has raised the death toll due to swine flu to three in Vijayapura district.

She was a resident of Sheikh Colony near Taj Bavadi in the city and was suffering from diabetes and heart-related problems as well.

As of now, 37 suspected cases of H1N1 have been reported. As many as 11 people are currently undergoing treatment for the disease.
