HAL to set up massive plants in Tumakuru

HAL will set up greenfield facilities for making light utility helicopter (LUH) and naval multi-role helicopter in Karnataka, with the State government allotting 610 acres in Tumakuru district for the purpose.

Action has been initiated for obtaining the required approval. With the Centre mandating HAL and National Aeronautical Laboratory to jointly take up design, development and manufacture of 70-100 seater regional civil aircraft through a special purpose vehicle, HAL has its hand full. The teams have started working and approvals are being obtained from Ministry of Defence, HAL chairman T Suvarna Raju told the press at the Aero India show in Yelahanka.

Indian military and civil helicopter market, Raju said, was a big opportunity for HAL. The PSU has taken steps to position itself well in this market by having products in the two-to-10 tonne category. “The development of LUH would be very crucial to our plans as defence market capitalisation is based on timelines of this programme. We need to strive and achieve the operational clearance in line with the operational requirements of our defence services,” Suvarna said.
