Law Ministry gets Rs 212.29 cr for justice delivery mission

Rs 212.29 crore has been given to the Law Ministry for the National Mission for Justice Delivery and Legal Reforms.

The programme is aimed at ensuring a well-coordinated response of the executive and the judiciary for speeding up delivery of justice in the country and reduce the delay in the disposal of cases by the courts.

Like last fiscal, Rs 5 crore has been earmarked for family courts.  The ministry’s annual outlay has gone up substantially this time, but most of the money will be spent for meeting the government’s liability towards charges for conduct of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

While the Law Ministry was provided with Rs 381.33 crore last fiscal for elections, this time it has been granted Rs 1,555.40 crore.

The statement says that the “provision is for meeting carry-forward liability in respect of charges for conduct of General Lok Sabha elections.” The legislative department in the Law Ministry is the administrative department for the Election Commission. The election-related expenditure is settled between the Law Ministry and the Home Ministry through “book adjustments”.

The Election Commission’s outlay has also been increased from Rs 70 crore to Rs 80 crore.  The provision is mainly for the establishment-related expenditure of the Election Commission of India and for the expenditure to be incurred on construction of India International Institute for Democracy and Election Management campus.
 It also includes provision for purchase of computer items and maintenance of the scheme of National Voters Awareness Campaign.
