32-yr-old woman killed as portion of balcony collapses on her head

A 32-year-old woman died after a portion of the balcony on the first floor of her house fell on her head in east Delhi’s Karkardooma on Saturday morning.

The victim has been identified as Suman, a mother of four who lived in a rented flat on the ground floor of the building. She was rushed to the nearby Hedgewar Hospital where she died during her treatment.

Police said that the incident took place at about 10 am on Saturday when the woman was sweeping the outside portion of her house on Saturday morning.

A large portion of the balcony suddenly collapsed with the debris hitting her head.
Locals pulled her out of the debris and the fire department officials rushed to the spot, but the woman could not be saved.

“The accident is suspected to have been caused by construction going on in the building. It was an old dilapidated building,” said a police officer.

A case of causing death by negligence has been registered against the house owner.
There was no one on the balcony at the time of the collapse. The building was immediately evacuated by the fire department which had received a call at 10.17 am.
