GMR Energy Trading, a part of the GMR Group of Companies, has become the latest firm to come under the scanner in the probe into the leak of confidential government documents. The GMR Group is an infrastructural company headquartered in Bangalore.

According to sources, GMR Energy Trading’s Manager (Corporate Relations) Rajbir Singh has been called in for questioning by Delhi Police.

“We have called a senior-ranked officer from GMR Energy Trading for questioning,” said Delhi Police Commissioner Bhim Sain Bassi.

Sources said Rajbir will be questioned in connection with theft of documents from Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry in central Delhi’s Shastri Bhawan.

According to the firm’s website, within a short span of one year of operations, they have traded more than 1100 MU power all over India.

So far, 16 people have been arrested in two cases filed over the matter with Crime Branch police station.

Police also say several officials from independent energy consulting firms are absconding.

“Many people are still on the run. We are looking for those working in two other consultancy agencies. We are analysing the documents seized from the arrested people,” Bassi added.

Executives from Reliance Industries, Jubilant Energy, Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, Essar and Cairn India are among those arrested so far. They have been booked under sections 411 (receiver of stolen property) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.

Intensifying probe into the case, police have also been conducting raids in Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida to recover the stolen documents. Bassi said raids are necessary for the course of investigation.

“We may further raid places as our aim is to reach the bottom of the whole thing,” he said.

The official documents were photocopied and leaked in return for money, and sums ranging between Rs 25,000 and Rs 50,000 were paid to get the job done.
