Traffic police assaults ex-serviceman for making way for ambulance

Last Updated 03 March 2015, 20:09 IST

An ex-serviceman, who cleared the way for an ambulance stuck in a jam near the Cauvery theatre junction on Ballari Road on Tuesday morning, was assaulted by a traffic cop.

Ganganna, a sub-inspector (SI) attached to the Sadashivanagar traffic police station, was suspended for assaulting Nagappa. The police action came after video footage of the incident aired on news channels caught the attention of senior traffic police officers.

Nagappa is a resident of Munireddy Palya and works as a security guard at the Hindustan Petroleum Officers’ Quarters.

Due to rain on Tuesday morning, the magic box near the Cauvery junction was waterlogged and vehicles could not pass through. Vehicles heading towards Ballari Road were diverted onto the road next to the magic box and soon, traffic piled up around the magic box.

An ambulance carrying blood, heading towards Yelahanka, was stuck in the jam at the junction for over 30 minutes. Nagappa noticed the ambulance and removed the barricades tied together, clearing the way for it. Ganganna saw what Nagappa was doing and ran to him.

He pushed him around and verbally abused him for moving the barricades. Nagappa tried to explain that another traffic SI, Ramamurthy, who was monitoring the situation at the spot, had signalled to him to remove the barricade for the ambulance. But Ganganna would not listen to him, said the police.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Nagappa said, “The world has become such a bad place that even helping for a good cause, you get beaten up. I just did that out of concern and acted according to the police who told me to move the barricade. I was trying to explain that to Ganganna, but he was not ready to listen and started manhandling me and used profanities.”

Babu Rajendra Prasad, DCP, Traffic (East), said, “Ganganna has been suspended for his action and it is not fair on the traffic cop’s part to assault a person who was trying to make way for an ambulance. It is an unfortunate incident and strict action will be taken against officials who act in such a manner.”
