Free meals planned for farmers at APMCs

 A proposal to provide free meals to farmers, who bring agricultural produce to agricultural produce marketing committee (APMC) yards for sale, is before the government, Agricultural Marketing and Horticulture Minister Shamanur Shivashankarappa said on Tuesday.

He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the construction of a 5,000 metric tonne-capacity godown on the APMC premises in the town.“The facility will be announced in the budget. It will be introduced in a selected APMCs on a pilot basis and later extended across the State depending on the response,” the minister said.

The minister said that the government would spend Rs seven crore to create a new marketing system in which farmers could sell their produce to consumers directly every Sunday at all APMCs across the State. Machines would be installed at 50 markets all over the State to clean agricultural produces. Each machine will cost Rs two crore, he said.
