UP doctor performs 27 sterilisations in one hour

A doctor in Uttar Pradesh had put the lives of 27 women in danger by performing sterilisation surgeries on them in just one hour.

Reports said women who came to a health camp organised at a primary health centre in Chandauli district –about 300 kilometres from state capital Lucknow—were made to lie down on the floor close to the toilets as no beds were available.

Sources said the lady surgeon at the Nymtabad primary health centre took just two minutes for each patient to perform sterilisation. While health workers brought 32 women for surgery, five of them were found unwell.

Two health workers, Manorama and Ranno Devi, objected to the hasty manner in which the surgeries were performed as well as the poor arrangements at the centre, but were rebuked by the health centre officials.

“The surgeries are more important not the arrangements...we did not want to turn away the women for lack of beds,” said a senior doctor at the health centre.

Reports said those attended on the women also protested over the sloppy manner of the surgeries and the meagre arrangements, while sources added that the district magistrate has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
