Revising Committee may be set up to review 'Fifty Shades of Grey: Censor board

After giving their clearance to the controversial erotic romantic movie 'Fifty Shades of Grey,' the censor board today said it could set up a "Revising Committee" as per the norms it will look into the issue as and when a request was received from the applicant.

"As and when a request is received from the applicant, a Revising Committee (RC) will be constituted as per procedure," CBFC chief executive Shravan Kumar said in a statement.
Even after the RC gives a verdict refusing certification, an appeal can be made to FCAT (Film Certification Appellate Tribunal), the statement added.

The Examining Committee (EC) of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), also known as censor board, had refused to clear the movie. Released during the Valentine's day weekend in the US and other countries, the film has done exceptionally well at the box office, despite mixed reviews. But it has failed to get a release in countries like Malaysia and Indonesia.

"The application of 'Fifty Shades of Grey' (English) was received from NBC Universal Media on January 23," Board said adding that the applicant vide his letters dated January 31 and February 5, 2015 requested to hold back the EC meeting as they were not able to provide the content for screening before the EC, the statement further said.

"Hence, the application was cancelled on February 12 due to non-availability of content for screening despite repeated requests made by CBFC.  Subsequently, when it was informed by the applicant that they were able to provide the content for screening, the EC was constituted, which examined the film on January 28," it said.

There was a difference of opinion and the Chairman accepted the majority recommendation of the EC not to certify the film, the Board said in the statement.
The findings of the EC were communicated to the applicant on March 3, it said, adding the process of certification at CBFC involves two stages - Examination Committee and Revising Committee.
