Brickbats on social media for Nirbhaya's lawyer

Last Updated 08 March 2015, 09:54 IST

The social media is full of outrage against M L Sharma, the lawyer of Nirbhaya’s rapist, in a BBC documentary. A City girl seems to be the focal point for the collective anger against Sharma, who has made derogatory remarks against women.

The letter by Pal - a call centre employee - saw 29,200 shares on Facebook. The release of the documentary ‘India’s Daughter’ about the December 16, 2013 Delhi gangrape has evoked a mixed response.

The letter is titled ‘An Open Letter To The Lawyer Of Nirbhaya Rapist, M L Sharma, To Punish Me’.

In the documentary, Sharma says a girl is like a flower and all men are supposed to protect that flower. Reacting to this, she says in the letter, “Also, the man with her who tried to protect her was hurt. Why? Wasn’t he protecting the girl? Didn’t you say this is in fact a man’s responsibility? Then why was he hurt?”

‘What compassion is’
“Maybe, if you worked in a call centre, you would learn what empathy, what courtesy is and most importantly, what compassion is,” the letter says.

Speaking about her activities and the kind of clothes she chooses to wear, the 24-year-old girl has, in the letter, said, “You don’t know a thing about me. And yet, you have stereotyped me as a Bad Girl. Fine. I accept it.”
