Family face agonising wait for techie's body

Last Updated 10 March 2015, 19:32 IST

It has been an agonising wait for the family members of Prabha Arun Kumar, a software engineer from Bengaluru, who was stabbed to death in Sydney on Saturday.

Due to certain procedural delays, the body will not be reaching the City on Wednesday, as expected by the family. They will now have to wait for a few more days.

“A few procedures pertaining to paper works could not be completed on Tuesday. Hence, we were not permitted to bring the body to India,” victim’s relative, Thrijesh, told Deccan Herald  in Bengaluru.

The family members had made all preparations to receive the body. They were disappointed when they learnt about the delay.

“The Australian police have promised that they would permit Prabha’s husband, Arun Kumar, to take the body to India as soon as possible. He might proceed to Bengaluru along with the body in a couple of days,” Thrijesh added.

Procedural delay
The norms prevent the police in Australia to give permission to take the body out of the country before the completion of preliminary inquiry.

The police are yet to complete the preliminary inquiry into the attack on Prabha and hence refused permission to Arun Kumar, sources close to the victim’s family, said.

The Sydney police told the family members that they would be able to permit Arun Kumar to leave Australia only towards the weekend.

Arun Kumar and Dr Shankar Shetty, the victim’s brother, requested the Sydney police to complete the formalities soon and hand over the body on Thursday, so that they could reach India by Saturday. But the police have not given any specific assurance in this regard, the sources added.

The Sydney police, according to victim’s family members, have intensified the probe to ascertain the identity of the assailant and the motive behind the attack.
