Omar govt paid Rs 15 lakh to arrest Masarat: ex cop

The release of Masarat Alam, who spearheaded stone-pelting agitations in Srinagar between 2008 and 2010 took another turn when former Srinagar Senior of police (SSP) Syed Ashaq Bukhari claimed that the Omar Abdullah government paid the police a bounty of Rs 15 lakh to arrest over a thousand protesters including Masarat Alam.

Bukhari was quoted in Hindustan Times as saying, “We had to arrest 1,585 agitators from across the valley in 2010 (to bring the situation under control). Alam remained one of the organisers and may not fall in the category of being the most hardliner behind every protest.”

Alam who was seen as the chief insitgator in the 2010 protest was known for issuing calenders for hartals and stone pelting. He was arrested in October 2010 in an operation in which police and central agencies for anti-national activities. 

Reacting to the allegations, NC spokesman Junaid Azim Mattu was quoted in Hindustan Times as saying, “From start to end, these are unfounded bundle of lies spread by Bukhari who has no credibility or objectivity.” 

The protests during the agitations left more than 120 persons dead.
