'Middlemen hindering benefits reaching people'

Ambedkar Abhivruddhi Nigama Chairperson Mallajamma said eligible beneficiaries of various schemes are not getting the facilities, due to the interference of middlemen.

She was speaking at an interaction programme held at Chandregowda Hall at Rathnagiri road in Chikkamagaluru on Wednesday.

She said the corporation has been marred by corrupt practices and assured of making sincere efforts to curb the corruption. The eligible have no awareness on the facilities they are supposed to get. The officials have been directed to help the beneficiaries in this regard.

Dalit Sangharsha Samithi district convener N Venkatesh said that the target for self employment scheme has been set to 20 and hence, a large number of applicants have been deprived of benefits. At least 100 beneficiaries should be selected in a taluk, he said and complained that the bore wells are not dug properly.

Mallajamma said the corporation will do the needful towards providing dignity of life to dalits. It has been told to install GPS while digging of bore wells, to prevent misuse of funds, she said. BSP leader K T Radhakrishna suggested recommending banks towards giving direct loans to dalits.

Zilla Panchayat member Ananth and others also took part. Mallajamma said a proposal has been submitted to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to reserve Rs 2500 in the state budget  for the development of dalits. She was addressing mediapersons after chairing a the reveiew meeting of Ambedkar Abhivriddhi Nigama in the district on Wednesday.

She said schemes providing assistance towards higher education of dalit students and direct loans towards self employment will be implemented by the Corporation.

Financial assistance to handicapped,  facilities to devadasis will also be provided on priority basis. It has been decided to avail loan from National Development Corporation and to provide 300 Innova cars, she said.   

There are 1.20 crore dalits in the state. 25,000 will be provided facilities this year. Two lakh will be provided training in self employment. In Chikkamagaluru district not many have availed loan facilities and are working in coffee plantations. There is a need to create awareness among them on the schemes of the corporation.
