Porters plan march to Vidhana Soudha on March 17

The Centre of Indian Trade Union Porters’ Federation has planned a ‘Vidhana Soudha chalo’ on March 17 to urge State government meet their various demands. Porters from across the State will take part in the event.

Federation president K Mahantesh told reporters here on Friday that the porters would congregate at the City Railway Station from where they would take out a march to Freedom Park, the venue of the event. State-level leaders would address the convention.

More than one lakh porters including women work at 146 Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee yards and 383 sub-markets in the State. Their demands are not being met since they belong to unorganised sector.

They are being deprived of their rights and pressure would be put on the government to meet various long-pending demands of the porters.

Porters working at APMC yards, government and private godowns and other establishments lack even the basic idea of their entitlements.

Except the meagre daily wage they are not getting anything in return for their toil. Hence, there is an absolute need to organise such workers and make them aware of their rights, Mahantesh said.

The salary of government and private employees go up whenever the prices of essential commodities go up. But, the porters do not get any such incentive. They have not been getting paid in proportion to their hard work, he said.

The porters demand more funds for “Kayaka Nidhi,” issue of identity cards, payment of minimum wages and other benefits and implementation of a housing scheme.
