Now, free shoes, socks for kids in govt schools

Students studying in government schools from classes one to 10 will get a pair of shoes and two pairs of socks soon, according to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s announcement in the budget.

The government is already providing free uniforms, textbooks and bicycles to the children studying in government schools. The latest addition seems to be an effort to attract children to government schools at a time when several of them are opting for private schools under the Right to Education Act. An allocation of Rs 120 crore for the plan will benefit as many as 54.54 lakh students across the State.

Acknowledging it, Mohammed Mohsin, Commissioner for Public Instruction, said: “Yes, we want to attract more children to government schools through the initiative. In order to ensure the physical security of children, to protect them from instances like snakebites, cold weather and rough roads, socks and shoes will be given to them, so that students, especially those in the rural areas, are benefitted. The freebies will also bring in uniformity among all children studying in government schools,” he said.

In order to promote green initiatives among students, as many as 100 government higher primary schools, a 100 high schools and a 100 pre-university colleges will be provided with solar education kits, and such schools will be declared ‘green power schools.’ These schools will receive solar power equipment to save electricity.

For infrastructure
The budget allocates Rs 110 crore to improve infrastructure in government schools and colleges for the construction of new buildings, toilets, libraries, water facilities, etc.
Under ‘Shalagegagi Naavu Neevu’ programme, a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Committee would be established to develop infrastructure facilities for schools under the public-private partnership model.

To encourage participation among primary and high school students in national tests and competitions, a ‘Spardha Kali’ programme will be taken up.

Under a Central scheme ‘Shikshakara Shikshana,’ teachers will be with provided with facilities to improve their teaching skills. The scheme also envisages opening of Education Service Centres in the offices of Block Education Officer, Deputy Director of Public Instruction and District Institute of Education and Training. Infrastructure will also be provided to upgrade the Government BEd College at Chikkaballapur. A one-time grant of Rs five crore has been provided to Bharat Scouts and Guides, Karnataka State Organisation, to develop infrastructure for training.
