Last Updated 13 March 2015, 20:32 IST

The Park Street rape victim, who became one of the most prominent voices for the rights of women facing abuse and sexual harassment, passed away here on Friday.

Doctors at a state-run specialised medical institute said she succumbed to encephalitis, which was caused after she suffered meningitis few days ago.

“She passed away on early Friday morning. She was suffering from health problems and got admitted to a city hospital for the last few days,” Joint Commissioner of Police, Pallab Kanti Ghosh, told reporters later in the day.

The woman, in her mid thirties, is survived by two teenage daughters. Refused to be referred to in the media just as “Park Street rape victim”, she came out and revealed her identity to the world.

She was raped by more than two men in a moving car on the night of February 6, 2012, after they picked her up from a popular nightclub of a luxury hotel on Park Street on the pretext of giving her dropping her home.

Prime accused at large
While three of the youths accused in the case are behind bars, two others, including the prime accused, Kader Khan, are still at large.

Though Khan’s whereabouts are unknown, the police said he escaped to Thailand soon after the incident, after hiding in Mumbai for a few days.

The police refused to comment on the future of the case, now that the complainant is dead.
