'Disintegration of family system is the cause for mental illness'

“There has been decline in human values in the recent years. The joint family system is giving way to nuclear families and family discord is giving resulting in mental illnesses,” said High Court Judge and Karnataka Nyayanga Academy President N Kumar.

Speaking after inaugurating 24th district -level workshop on mental health awareness programme, organised jointly by the judiciary department, District legal services authority, health and family welfare department, Karnataka State Mental Health Authority in Madikeri on Saturday, he said, inferiority complex, fear, anger and pressure owing to life style changes were responsible for mental illness. "Exercise, yoga helps maintain a sound body. One should develop cordial relation with the family members and colleagues in office," he added.

District and Sessions Judge Master R K G M M Mahaswamiji said, the body and mental health were like two faces of the  same coin. "All of us live under pressure. However, it should not lead to illness.”
Deputy Commissioner Anurag Tewari said that in a multi-culture society people should learn lead a life with peace and harmony. "We should keep aside our individual interests and work towards the integrated development of the country," he said.

Mysore Medical College and Research Head Dr Raveesh, Abhaya Hospital, Bengaluru Director Dr A Jagadish, JSS Medical College lecturer Dr T S Satyanarayana Rao delivered lectures on the occasion.
