Depressed over constant harassment and stalking by her neighbours, a 17-year-old girl tried to commit suicide at her house in east Delhi’s Trilokpuri on Friday.

It is alleged that she had also approached local police before taking the extreme step, but no action was initiated. An FIR was filed only after locals held a protest outside Mayur Vihar police station.

The girl tried to hang herself by the ceiling fan in her bedroom, but was noticed by her sister. She raised an alarm, on which, other members of the family rushed to the room and consoled her. Hearing the commotion, neighbours also gathered.

They were told about the girl’s ordeal after which a group went to the local police station and shouted slogans over police inaction. The girl is a class 12 student at a local government school.

“It is alleged that she was constantly harassed and stalked by her three neighbours who also misbehaved with her on Thursday,” said a police officer.

In her statement, she told police that she was in the market of block 28 when the accused followed her and misbehaved on Thursday.

She informed her mother about the incident which then led to a heated argument between the victim’s family and families of the accused.

Late on Thursday, her mother made a call to the police control room claiming that she was also thrashed by the family members of the accused. However, no case or arrest was made. The girl’s father claimed that they had complained with local police about the issue several times in the past, but they did not take any necessary action.

“They know the issue very well, but still they did not take appropriate action against the stalkers,” her father told Deccan Herald.

Police registered a case after protests were held on Friday and apprehended two accused on Saturday.

“Another accused is absconding and raids are being conducted to nab him,” the officer added.
