Heavy rains lash parts of State, damage crops

 Rain accompanied with thunder and lightning lashed parts of the State on Sunday.

Hamsabhavi in Hirekerur taluk of Haveri district received rains from Saturday evening till Sunday morning. Three big hailstones were found a farm field around two kilometre from the village.

Umapathy Basur of Hamsabhavi said that the villagers had never seen such big-sized hailstones. “They were so big that one man could not lift them. They appeared to be weighing at least three quintals,” he said. There were no reports of any casualties as no one was working in the field when the hailstones fell.

Banana plants damaged

Heavy rain coupled with gusty winds razed banana plants on more than 20 acres of land to ground at Indur village in Mundgod taluk of Uttara Kannada district on Saturday evening.

The plantations of four farmers in the village had suffered extensive damage. The officials of the Revenue department visited the gardens for assessing the damage.

In Shivamogga

It rained heavily for more than an hour in Shivamogga on Sunday evening. Ripponpet received rain for about 30 minutes while it was moderate in Shikaripur. There were no reports of rain from any other taluks.
