Food supplies department goes digital

Last Updated 16 March 2015, 01:58 IST

Citizens can now monitor performance of the officers of the Department of Food Supplies & Consumers Affairs online. This has helped bring transparency to the department with citizens being able to track the progress of cases.

“The facility has led to greater transparency in the process of inclusion of households under food security and has made the functioning of the department and the Public Distribution System more transparent,” said Asim Ahmed Khan, Minister of Food Supplies & Consumer Affairs, on Sunday.

The real-time information about disposal of applications for providing food security and issuing of ration cards by inspectors and food and supply officers have been made available on the website.

Citizen can see the names of people who have been sanctioned food security and can also file objections against inclusion. Similarly, applicants whose food security application has been rejected can file appeal against this decision.

Pendency of applications in a circle is also visible to people. This process is likely to put pressure on the officers to perform consistently.

The department has 70 offices in the city where applications for grant of food security can be submitted. Each office has one Food & Supply Officer and Inspector who scrutinises the applications and decides eligibility of the applicants to get food security under the National Food Security Act 2013.

The Minister said that to track the department’s work progress, citizens can visit the website and click on the link named “Date wise Disposal of Applications by FSO/Inspector” which has been provided on the home page of the portal nfs.delhi.gov.in. This is on the right hand side under the head “Citizens Corner”.

Clicking on the link takes the person to the page containing the information about disposal of applications. Here the person visiting the site has to select the circle whose information she is interested in viewing.  The names and details of  applications disposed off till that time becomes available to the viewer.
