A crematorium with a view in Hyderabad

Wi-Fi goodbye

A new crematorium in the upmarket Jubilee Hills area of the city has a unique distinction: It comes with Wi-Fi facility to telecast the last rites of people on social networking sites.

The ultra-modern crematorium, developed under Public Private Partnership (PPP) model over an area of 3.7 acres, has been named “Mahaprasthanam”.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has built this facility at a cost of Rs 3 crore in association with the Phoenix Foundation.

The crematorium has all the modern amenities, including lockers, electric pier, storage rooms, rest rooms, wash rooms, flower arrangement facilities and car parking.

It also has “on-site traditional pandit, a cafeteria and many more facilities”, said GHMC Commissioner C Somesh Kumar.

“Most important is the live streaming of the entire process, thanks to Wi-Fi connectivity,” he said.

The new facility will enable the kin of the deceased to watch the proceedings from anywhere in the world.

According to Somesh Kumar, this is the first in a series of 30 pollution-free crematoriums being planned by the municipal corporation in the city. The parties performing funerals will be charged a nominal fee for using the facilities.
