Sheikh Hasina's visit brings hope for Tripura

"The discussions concerning the issues of Tripura took place between the Prime Ministers of the two countries in our presence which was very positive and has brought a new message for development of the state", Sarkar, who attended the dinner hosted by the Prime Minister in honour of Sheikh Hasina on Monday, told reporters here last night.

The Chief Minister said it was likely that Tripura would get the opportunity of using the Chittagong seaport and Ashuganj river port.

A 14 km long railway track would be laid by India to link Agartala station with Akhaura in Bangladesh and border haats (markets) would be constructed on both sides of the border to facilitate border trade among the people.

Tripura shares a 856 km long porous international border with Bangladesh and both sides of the border are densely populated.

The International border even runs through many houses and divides them.

"During the dinner I talked to Sheikh Hasina who recalled the days of liberation movement in 1971. When I invited her to Tripura she accepted the invitation and said she was eager to come," Sarkar said.

Sarkar said prior to the Bangladesh Prime Minister's visit to New Delhi, the state government had apprised all the issues concerning Tripura to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the issues were likely to be resolved soon.

He said "When Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee visited Dhaka as Foreign Minister, then also I apprised him through a letter about the issues related to the interests of Tripura".

The Chief Minister welcomed Sheikh Hasina's stance that she would not allow anybody to use her country's soil against India and said "it's a bold decision".

He said this visit would also have a very positive impact on enhancing trade with the neighbouring country.
