Vented dam a picture of 'neglect'

A vented dam constructed to irrigate the farm land belonging to Koraga families— the primitive tribe of the region— at Miyottu Palke in Andinje Gram Panchayat in Belthangady Taluk, stands as a glaring example of “neglect”  and poor quality. The dam that was constructed recently has been leaking, thus proving not much beneficial to the families residing in the region.

Poor quality of work is also yet another case of non-utilisation of available water resources. The dam was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 18 lakh, under tribal sub plan recently.

“The stored water leaks on either side of the retaining wall of the vented dam and also in between the wooden planks installed to check water from flowing during summer. As a result, the water may not be in a position to be stored during summer to facilitate the Koraga families to take up farming activities,” said Koraga beneficiaries.

Long pending demand
It was a long pending demand of the seven Koraga families to construct a vented dam across, a water body that flows nearby, to store the water during summer. The vented dam will not only help in irrigating the farm land but also help in improving the ground water level.

“We were happy when the work was sanctioned and real work on constructing the vented dam commenced, with a hope that all our water woes to irrigate the farm land would be solved. However, when water started leaking after completing the work, we were disappointed,” said a beneficiary.

“In fact, a few years ago, a vented dam was constructed upstream of the present vented dam. As it was of no use for the families, we demanded another vented dam. The water storage barrage constructed upstream has become defunct and has collapsed. However, there is some hope after ITDP has promised to look into the work,” the beneficiary added.

Leakage problem
Following a complaint by Jana Shiakshana Trust, the Zilla Panchayat CEO has written to the Project Coordinator of ITDP to rectify the loopholes in the work in her letter dated March 9. The letter said that the leakage problem in the vented dam should be set right to ensure that the Koraga families get benefit from the development work taken up.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, ITDP Project Coordinator Sabeer Ahmed Mulla said that the ITDP had released fund to Panchayat Raj Engineering Division to construct the vented dam. “The leakage of water from the vented dam has been brought to our notice. The ITDP has written to the  Panchayat Raj Engineering Division to rectify the problem. I will do the follow up in this regard.”
