'Ground water depleting fast in B'luru'

Last Updated 22 March 2015, 19:39 IST

Bengaluru is a “red area” where ground water is depleting fast and no safe water is available, Suresh Heblikar, Chairman of Eco-watch, an environmental non-profit, said, quoting a research by the Central Ground Water Board.

If nothing is done now, the City will become like an Egyptian pyramid which is good for a visit, but not fit for human settlement, in 20 years, Heblikar said at an event to mark the World Water Day on Sunday.

To mark the occasion, Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) and Youth Issues Wing launched an awareness vehicle which will go around Bengaluru creating awareness on water conservation.

This apart, Water Literacy Foundation and Ajmera Infinity Apartments Owners’ Welfare Association organised a world literacy campaign where the importance of rain water and grey water harvesting on ground water table management was stressed.

World Water Day

The day is celebrated on March 22 every year to create awareness on water-related issues. This year’s theme was ‘Water and Sustainable Development’ which gives an opportunity to highlight the role of water in sustainable development. The United Nations had held the first World Water Day in 1993.
