The Congress councillors are geared up to stage a demonstration over non-payment of salaries, pensions and other benefits to employees by the East Delhi Municipal Corporation, during its House meeting on Monday.

The east civic agency needs Rs 87 crore a month just to pay salaries and other benefits to its over 27,000 employees.

Leader of Opposition in East Delhi Municipal Corporation, Varyam Kaur said the Congress councillors will protest around 1 pm on Monday.

“We will do dharna before the East Corporation’s House meeting starts. Our main demands will be disbursement of salaries, pensions and other benefits to the employees. Also the civic agency is harassing shop owners in the name of conversion charge. We would want to discuss all these matters in the House meeting,” Kaur said.

Asked if the corporation will be able to generate that much cash to disburse salaries, a senior official said, “The civic agency is trying to figure out a way to ensure that salaries are given to the employees as soon as possible.”

Mayor of East Corporation Meenakshi has been trying to meet Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. But she alleges that the CM is not giving her an appointment to discuss the matter.
