Rlys to involve locals for disaster response

Last Updated 23 March 2015, 20:49 IST

Following complaints of delay in rescue operations after train accidents, Indian Railways has begun an initiative to involve local people in disaster management to mobilise faster emergency assistance.

The ministry would create disaster management communities across the country comprising of District Magistrate, District Police, hospitals, blood banks, NGOs and common citizens, who would swiftly manage the rescue efforts.

“The communities will be connected electronically and will be accessible through smart phones so that the member of railways or anyone who is a part of it could instantly activate emergency assistance,” said a railway official.

He revealed that the first of its kind initiative is being set up by the ministry, the IRCTC and local circles. Online communities for over 100 districts are already set up and more districts will be added in the coming weeks, the official said. Other agencies like National Disaster Management Authority and State Disaster Management Authorities will also be invited to participate in the initiative, the official said.
