Cong plans farmers' rally

Keeping up the heat on the Modi government over the contentious land acquisition bill, the Congress is holding a farmers’ rally here on April 12 to highlight agrarian issues.

While Congress president Sonia Gandhi will be addressing the rally, there was no word on the presence of Rahul Gandhi, who has taken a political sabbatical. The party is seeking to build up on what it sees as “early successes” on its opposition to the land bill.

Party managers believe that Sonia has been able to strike a chord with the farmers and give a voice to the “discontent”.

Sonia has taken the lead to rally together the demoralised party rank and file. Her kilometre-long walk from Parliament to Rashtrapati Bhavan with leaders of 14 political parties have charged up Congress workers. She also visited Rajasthan and Haryana over the weekend to meet farmers affected by unseasonal rains.

All chief ministers of Congress-ruled states and presidents of the state units of the party will be asked to attend the rally. The Congress has set up a committee chaired by A K Antony with AICC general secretary Digivijay Singh as its convenor to ensure success of the rally.
