Govt suspects political hand in Mumbai church attack

Last Updated 23 March 2015, 21:29 IST

Amid the walkout by opposition Congress and the NCP from the Maharashtra Assembly on Monday, the BJP-Shiv Sena government suspected political hand in Saturday’s attack on a church in Navi Mumbai.

On Saturday morning, unidentified miscreants hurled stones inside the St George Catholic
Church in New Panvel, damaging the glass enclosure of St George’s statue.

Revenue and Agriculture Minister Eknath Khadse, who also holds the minority affairs portfolio, made a statement in the Assembly which did not satisfy the opposition.

“A foreign hand, anti-social elements or a political person may be involved in the incident. A political hand cannot be ruled out. Detailed facts would be revealed before the end of the ongoing legislature session,” the minister said.
