N Usharani from the Department of Studies in Mass Communication and Journalism, University of Mysore, on Tuesday, recommended inclusion of women’s empowerment, civil society movement and corruption among other social issues in the questionnaire prepared for the proposed socio, educational census in the State.

Participating in an interaction, organised by the department of Information and Public Relations and State Backward Classes Commission, in association with Mysore District Journalists Association (MDJA), Usharani said, “Women’s empowerment is happening at a good pace, while there is an awakening in the society, leading to movements.

Opinion

Most importantly, people’s opinion about corruption should also be collected to understand their stand on the issue. Besides, there are people who may have been not able to air their grievances. Such cases of ‘voice poverty’ and ‘voice apartheid’ should be included during the census to make it more meaningful”.

She said, the census should be a continuous exercise, as such activities will help document the status of the people belonging to different sections of the society.

In the wake of allegations that such census are aimed at collating data on the number of castes with the sole intention of vote bank politics, Usharani said, “It is not easy to deceive the people, who are growing beyond caste lines. Recently, the death of IAS officer D K Ravi rocked the State, people expressed their resent irrespective of caste”.

Such census will also help bring endangered communities and languages to light. The census should be held once in five years.
