A three-year-old girl and her grandmother were killed after an allegedly speeding truck hit the scooty they were riding before running over them in west Delhi on Saturday afternoon.
The girl’s father is stated to be in a serious condition at a hospital where he was admitted by some other commuters who witnessed the accident.
The offending vehicle was chased down a few kilometers by a man in a car who finally intercepted it and nabbed the 27-year-old driver.
He has been arrested and booked for causing death by negligence and rash driving.
The victims are residents of Madipur in west Delhi. They were returning from a relative’s home on a Honda Activa scooty when the accident took place in Paschim Vihar area.
According to Balvinder Singh, a Hari Nagar resident who was in his Swift car right behind the offending truck at the time of the accident, the accused driver Gopal Singh was driving recklessly.
The truck hit the scooty from behind which caused the woman and the child in her arms to fall off the two-wheeler, said Balvinder.
“Their heads were crushed by the rear tyre of the truck,” he said.
The girl’s father Ravi, 28, too fell off his vehicle, but he escaped from being run over. The three were rushed to Balaji Action Hospital where the girl Dishu and her grandmother Roopvati were declared brought dead.
From the accident spot, police recovered a broken helmet that Ravi was wearing.
Roopvati’s helmet was suspected to have not been fastened well, forcing it to come off as she fell.
Balvinder, meanwhile, had chased the fleeing truck in his Swift car.
“He finally managed to intercept the truck just before Peeragarhi Chowk,” a police officer told Deccan Herald.
The driver Gopal Singh and his truck were handed over to police. Gopal was not drunk at the time of the accident, said police.
