A 12-year-old boy drowned in a canal in outer Delhi’s K N Katju Marg while accompanying his family to a ritual on Saturday. The body has been fished out and sent for post-mortem, said police.

The victim has been identified as Rithik, a class six student at a local government school in Shalamar village in the region. Rithik and his family were on a visit to the nearby Haiderpur water plant to immerse some religious items used for pooja during the navratras.

His mother indulged in the rituals while Rithik played with his cousins on the banks of the canal. Even as they were playing, Rithik’s foot accidentally slipped over a slimy surface and he fell into the canal.

The boy was swept away by the fast current of the canal. A couple of his relatives jumped into the canal to save him a few moments after he fell. It was, however, only many minutes later that one of the relatives could get to him.

Attempts were made to revive him soon after bringing him out of the water, but the boy showed little signs of recovery. He was rushed to Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital in Rohini where he was declared brought dead.

The hospital authorities informed police upon which the body was sent for post-mortem. A police officer said the family members were questioned about the incident. Foul play in the death has been ruled out.
