The same day a policeman was crushed to death by a dumper carrying illegally quarried sand in Madhya Pradesh on Sunday, his brother lost his legs after being pushed out of a train in New Delhi by a pickpocket.

Sudhir Singh Chouhan, a army jawan, was on his way home after getting news of his younger brother’s death. Both his legs were badly injured after being pushed out of a running train near Sadar Bazar station. The limbs had to be amputated at the army’s base hospital.

Sudhir’s brother Dharmendra Singh Chouhan, a head constable, was crushed to death on Sunday morning by a dumper that was allegedly carrying illegally quarried sand in MP’s Morena district.

Posted at Jammu, Sudhir had started off for his hometown in Gwalior immediately upon hearing of his brother’s death. With no reservations available, he purchased a general ticket and boarded a sleeper coach of the Jat Jamnagar Express train.

With the train being crowded, Sudhir chose a spot near the entrance of the compartment and placed his luggage nearby. As the train approached Sadar Bazar railway station at about 9.30 pm, he stood up in order to make space for passengers to enter or exit the compartment.

All of a sudden, a teenage boy boarded the train and stood on the stairs of the compartment with his one leg dangling in the air. “All of a sudden he pounced on my shirt with the intention of snatching my mobile phone. We were briefly engaged in a scuffle during which I slipped and the two of us fell off the running train,” the victim told police.

While the snatcher managed to recover and run away with the phone, Sudhir happened to come under the running train and his legs sustained severe injuries. One of the train passengers immediately alerted the police upon which a PCR van arrived at the spot and rushed the victim to Sushruta Trauma Centre. Police have registered a case in this connection and have questioned several persons, but the suspect is yet to be identified.
