A 21-year-old married woman committed suicide by hanging at her parents’ home in south Delhi’s Sangam Vihar on Wednesday evening.
The woman’s husband had been awarded a life sentence in a murder case just a year after the couple’s marriage four years ago. Left with an uncertain future, the woman had been in depression ever since.
Police said she was also disturbed over being ignored by her in-laws and not being told to come and stay with them.
“She and her parents had tried to get her divorced from her husband so that she could remarry, but her in-laws did not allow any initiation in the divorce process,” said a police officer.
Her mother was out of home for some work and her father was at his shop on Wednesday evening when the woman Shanno hanged herself from the ceiling fan in her room.
Her mother returned home to find the door open and Shanno hanging. Her cries drew the attention of the neighbours who informed police.
The body was brought down by a police team and sent to hospital for post-mortem.Questioning of the victim’s family revealed that Shanno was married to Azeem in Etah district of Uttar Pradesh in 2012. Three months into the marriage, she got to know that Azeem was wanted by the local police for the murder of a youth.
Husband arrestedHe was soon arrested and awarded life sentence in the case. Shanno left for her parents’ home in New Delhi, but her parents said she had been waiting to be called to stay with her in-laws.
Her parents did visit her in-laws’ home a few times in between to convince them to at least allow her to stay at her husband’s home, but they only received a cold response from them.
Her parents then suggested divorce as an option, but Azeem’s parents were allegedly unwillingly to go ahead with that either.
Left with few options, Shanno had been living in depression for the past couple of years, said police.
