I am happy that I am able to bowl and deal with pressures on the field: Zaheer

Zaheer Khan, until recently, was the bowling spearhead of the Indian national team. Not only would he call the shots with the ball, but would also help the captain set up the field. Injuries, though, hurt his career. His one-year absence from the cricketing arena raised calls for his retirement but Zaheer is not the one to throw the towel. Not yet.

The 36-year-old made an emphatic statement with his spell of 4-0-17-2 for Daredevils on Friday. On field, he actively pitched in with suggestions for field placements for his fellow seamer Nathan Coulter Nile and leg-spinner Imran Tahir.

Zaheer admitted missing the pulsating action on field. “I missed playing cricket. As a sportsperson you miss all this, the pressure seeping in, having to think what field to set, how I am going to work my way around the batters, how I am going to get the wickets. I was very nervous and was just trying to stay in the present. I felt good when I started bowling right in the middle. I was looking forward to this kind of pressure.

“Definitely this is not the best as I call it but I am happy that I am able to bowl the way I want to. Things will pick up as I bowl more. It is not easy as I am playing after a year.”

The talks of his retirement, he confessed, “hurt” him. “I know one thing for sure. It’s over when I say it’s over. Playing cricket gives me a high and I will continue doing it as long I feel that way,” he said.

Zaheer hoped Daredevils would continue with their winning momentum.” It’s about winning eight games to qualify. We are halfway there and now it is about winning four out of six. That’s the way we are looking at it”.

Kings XI Punjab coach Sanjay Bangar hoped things will soon change for them. “Miracles happen. It has happened in the past that teams have won games at a stretch and qualified. It’s not that it cannot be turned around,” he said.
