Former India cricketer Chetan Chauhan's niece was allegedly brutalised by her husband and was admitted to a hospital in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur town, about 90 km from here, with injury marks on her body.

According to sources, Chauhan's niece Richa, whose parents lived in Bengaluru and dealt in chemicals, was found running on the road in Bramhnagar locality in Kanpur late on Thursday night and shouting for help. A passer-by came to her rescue and informed the police, who took her to the police station and from there to a hospital.

Police sources said that Richa's body had several injury marks and she appeared to have been tortured.

Sources said that Richa, who was married to a Kanpur based businessman and lived at Shuklaganj in the neighbouring Unnao district, had called her relatives on Thursday and asked them to take her away alleging that her husband often brutalised her.

They said that a police team reached Richa's residence but was prevented from entering the house by her hubby's guards. As the cops were arguing with the guards, Richa's hubby allegedly bundled her into a car and sped away.

Sources said Richa managed to open the door of the car and jumped out shouting for help. Cops raided the house of Richa's hubby in a bid to arrest him but he was not found there.

Richa, who had married after a brief affair, alleged that her hubby was a drunkard and often tortured her. “Richa is very terrified and is in a state of shock'', said a senior police official in Kanpur.

Sources said that a case had been registered against Richa's husband and efforts were on to trace the culprit.
