Nagaland Governor P B Acharya said there is an urgent need to emotionally connect people in North Eastern states, as the area is most vulnerable to political threat in the neighbourhoods.

Speaking at the interaction, the Governor, who is also in charge of Assam and Tripura, said ethnic deprivation hurts the integrity of the nation. Besides political threats in the North Eastern states, there are nearly 200 insurgent groups in the region.

Stressing on confidence building measure, the Governor said the situation in the North Eastern region is not the creation of the people over there. It is default and deficiency of mainland people, he alleged. Stating that North Eastern people should be made the fraction of the mainland culture, the Governor added tribes have their own identity.

There are nearly 16 main recognised tribal groups, while 8-9 minor tribal group in the region. The Bibles are written in their own dialects. He said Christianity being the main tradition, the tribal people worship nature, he said.

Asserting that North Eastern states are blessed with bounty of natural resources, the Governor said there are many opportunities to tap the natural destinations in the area. Lamenting over the negligence on the tribal dialects in the academia, the Governor said ‘we have departments for foreign languages in every university. On the same lines, to respect tribal culture, universities should have a department or Chair for Indian tribal dialects especially for North Eastern states in every university. All our tribal dialects of North East are easy to learn and have limited beautiful vocabulary’.

He said he intends to introduce a diploma course on tribal dialects on North Eastern region with the duration of six months or a year.

The classes will be held on weekends and holidays. The eligibility would be matriculation and the applicants should not be from North East tribal group, as the project would be exclusively for mainland youths.

He said he has contacted major universities in the region.
