61 days ban on fishing in East, West coasts

Aiming conservation and an effective management of fishery resources, the Centre has imposed a uniform ban on fishing during the monsoon season in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (IEEZ), beyond territorial waters in both East and West coasts for 61 days in a year.

“Fishing will be banned for 61 days in the West coast (June 1st to July 31), Lakshadweep Islands and East Coast (April 15 to June 14th) and in Andaman and Nicobar Islands in a year, said an order issued by Department of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, the Ministry of Agriculture.“The coastal states and union territories are advised to follow the same during of uniform fishing ban within their territorial waters (of 0 to 12 nautical miles) as it is implemented in the IEEZ (12 to 200 nautical miles) adjacent to their territorial waters,” said the order.
