Inspector commits suicide after shooting senior

In a sensational incident, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) shot his senior and the latter’s orderly before committing suicide inside the Vakola police station at Santacruz western suburbs here on Saturday evening.

Assistant sub-inspector Shirke sustained grievous injuries — after he shot himself — and was pronounced dead while being rushed into a hospital. Senior inspector of police Vilas Joshi, who sustained a gunshot wound on his back and the orderly, who received an injury on his thigh, have been admitted to the Lilavati Hospital at Bandra here.

Both of them are said to be out of danger. Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria rushed to the spot to have a first-hand assessment of the situation. The Vakola police station initially registered a case and handed it over to the Crime Branch-CID.

Police officials said that Shirke was absent from duty. However, in the evening he turned up at the police station and started arguing with his superior officer. “When Joshi was leaving the police station in the evening, he shot at him and his orderly,” deputy commissioner of police Dhananjay Kulkarni said. The motive of the crime is yet to be ascertained. “We are investigating the matter, it is too early to comment on anything at this stage,” he said.
