IISc research scholars get stipend hikes, but issues persist

Last Updated 02 May 2015, 20:16 IST

Research scholars at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, who receive their funding directly from the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), have finally started getting their stipend hikes from Saturday, bringing joy to many.

A few problems with regard to the amount given, however, still remain for many others. Pankaj Jain, PhD scholar and secretary, Student’s Council at the IISc, put up a screenshot of his bank account on Facebook, showing an amount of around Rs 86,000 deposited in it.

“I am definitely happy that our demands have finally been met. I have received arrears from the month of October. While a number of students like me have got the hike, there were others who did not receive theirs. For example, there were a few from the batch of 2012 who did not receive their full hikes as yet. They will have to get the issue sorted out over the next week,” he said.

Amit Roy, a third year PhD scholar from the Department of Physics, is one such student who did not receive his full hike.

“I got my monthly stipend of Rs 18,000 and not the full hike with arrears. There is still some confusion. While some have got their full amount with arrears, others have only received a partial amount and still others have not got anything at all,” he said.
Although the MHRD issued a notification early March after months of protests, approving the hike in the scholars’ stipends, the money did not come even after nearly two months, leading to the students getting restless.

The MHRD notification stated that the hike would be effective from October 1 with the revised amount being Rs 25,000 from the earlier amount of Rs 16,000 for junior research scholars and Rs 28,000 from the earlier Rs 18,000 for senior research scholars.
