50 pc quota sought for women in all panchayats

Panchayat Raj Act stipulates the term of president and vice-president of Gram Panchayats at 30 months.

However, the incumbents are being changed in a span of six month to one year, they have stated in a memorandum submitted to the Member of Legislative Council, Nazir Ahmed, on Saturday.

The members have demanded to fix the term  of the office-bearers at five years and implement 50 pc reservation for women in the Gram Panchayat elections to be held this year.

Seeking steps to prevent atrocities on women GP chiefs, they have demanded to extend the ward-wise reservation to two years.

MLC Nazir Ahmed, who received the memorandum promised to draw the attention of the government by raising the issue in the Legislative Council. He also suggested to arrange interaction with the authorities concerned to discuss the problems being faced by women elected representatives
