A fitting tribute to the six-yard wonder

Last Updated 04 May 2015, 17:15 IST

A saree is six yards of pure elegance, grace and beauty. Celebrating the traditionalism and the revelation of an attire as sensual and as comfortable as the saree, Red Earth organised a two-day Saree Festival over the weekend, at Alliance Francaise de Delhi.

Providing the much needed platform to our depleting heritage and innate aesthetics, the festival was a delightful extravaganza that celebrated the saree from different perspectives like art, music and design.

One could feel the essence and the soothing feel of the fabrics as one stepped into the display area. As many as 14 designers came together under one roof to showcase excellence, in the rawest form. Speaking of the collection, Himanshu from Red Earth said, “We have tried to have a representation of all the different designs, styles and weavers from Banaras, Kota, Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Lucknow. Some of our star highlights are Shravan Ramaswamy and Ethicus to name a very few, who have their own unique and contemporary design sensibilities.”

Apart from maintaining diversity in displaying sarees from different parts of the country, the festival was also diverse in the display of fabrics, styles and embellishments of the finest quality, processed in an environment-friendly manner. “We entirely promote ethical fashion.

Having immense passion for working with the farmers, our main aim is to bring our weavers and the people behind these processes into the limelight,” said Vijaya
Laxmi Nachiar from Ethicus.

From the not so quintessential choli to the banarasi chikan and dyed sarees, from Bengal’s heritage handloom sarees to hand-woven sarees from Orissa and Andhra, the Festival had something in store for everyone.

While a section of the festival comprised experienced and well established designers, one part of it was dedicated to a group of young designers from the College of Arts, each of whom belonged to different backgrounds in the field of designing. An eclectic group of seven batchmates, these designers have been previously showcasing their collections through exhibitions and other platforms on a small scale.

Meanwhile, the magnificence of silk, the softness of pure cotton juxtaposed with the vibrancy of colours left the onlookers completely awestruck. It was the perfection and the sophistication in every single piece displayed, that generated a satisfied feeling amongst the visitors. Along with the sarees being reasonable priced, “I will surely recommend you to Meena Bazaar” and similar such comments were heard throughout.

Needless to say that a platform such as this is extremely important for acountry like India, where the saree originated. Commenting on the success of the festival, Himanshu concluded, “My motto in the Saree Festival is ‘Jai Saree’! Having developed a reputation in Delhi, I now look forward to consolidating the festival by hosting it on a national level. We are hoping to organise it in Mumbai and Bangalore later in the year.”
