Protesters picket MSEZ office following water woes

Evacuees of Permude, Bala and Kalavaru villages staged a protest in front of MUDA office in Mangaluru on Tuesday and picketed the office of MSEZ Deputy General Manager.

 The enraged people shouted slogans in front of the office and even entered with a bitter arguments with the officer alleging that the water supply has been cut from many days and urged to provide water and other basic amenities.

Under the leadership of MCC Corporators Ganesh Hosabettu, Harish Kumar and MUDA former Chairman S Ramesh, the protestors, comprising large number of women, staged a protest in front of the office by displaying empty pots.

The evacuees complained that though they have been provided sites at the rehabilitation colony in Kadekar and Mudubettu areas in Kulai, there are no basic amenities for the people. Water woes are in rise and people are struggling for drinking water. Initially, MSEZ supplied water from bore wells, which was not fit for drinking.

The drinking water was later supplied through tankers, but it has been stopped since a month from now and people of 400 families have been facing serious water woes.
The protestors picketed the office of MSEZ Deputy General Manager, at MUDA building and  vented their anger against the officials.

Despite MP Nalin Kumar visiting the colony and  directing the MSEZ officials, the concerned did not pay any heed and the water was not supplied so far. Before, water was supplied through tankers for once in three days.

Only when the residents of the rehabilitation colony announced of staging the protest, the MSEZ supplied water on the day of protest, they accused.

Heated argument

Discontented with the clarification by MSEZ Deputy General Manager S T Karkera, the protestors raised their voices and there was a heated argument between the official and the people. The protestors shouted slogans against MSEZ and urged to provide drinking water facilities regularly.

There was no wells in the area and the people have been facing serious drinking water woes.

They even claimed that the poor UGD connection has resulted in environment pollution in the area and has contaminated the sanctity of a religious shrine in the area. Also, there is no proper street lights in the area, they said.

The protestors stopped the protest after MSEZ official finally assured that he will speak to the Managing Director in this regard.

Ten tankers of water

Everyday, 10 tankers of drinking water will be supplied and more will be provided based on necessity. He said that the issue will be resolved at the earliest.

BJP Mangaluru North Block General Secretary Ashok, Mangalore City Corporation  leader of opposition Sudhir Shetty Kannur, BJP Mahila Morcha Mangaluru North Block President Pooja Prashanth Pai and residents of Kadekaru were present.
