Govt to institute Visvesvaraya award

The State government will organise events to celebrate the birth anniversary of Sir M Visvesvaraya every year and also institute a state award of excellence in the name of the renowned engineer.

Speaking at the S G Balekundri Award function organised by the Water Resources Department at the Vidhana Soudha on Tuesday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the Visvesvaraya Award would be bestowed on an engineer every year in recognition of her or his contribution.

Visvesvaraya’s birth anniversary (September 15) is celebrated as Engineers Day every year. “From now on, the celebrations will be taken up by the State government also,” the chief minister said.

Siddaramaiah said a report submitted by IAS officer Rajendra Kumar Kataria on the poor quality works in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike reflected on the poor standards maintained by a section of engineers.


As many as 15 engineers were presented the S G Balekundri Award for the years 2007, 2008 and 2009. The award carries a gold medal and a cash prize Rs 10,000.
