Rahul seeks ban on foreign trawlers

Keen to shed his image of a reluctant leader, Rahul Gandhi on Monday accused the Modi government of allowing foreign fishing trawlers in Indian waters, a charge denied by the Centre.

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Gandhi accused the Modi government of allowing foreign trawlers at the cost of Indian fishermen.

“As usual, our government is going against the interests of farmers, fishermen, labourers. Now they have extended the fishing ban and they are allowing foreign trawlers to come in at the expense of our fishermen,” he said.

Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari rejected the Congress leader’s charges saying there was no ban on fishing and no foreign trawlers were allowed by the government to fish in Indian waters.

Taking a jibe at the Centre, Gandhi said the “suit-boot ki sarkaar” was now bent on harming the interests of the fishermen after farmers.
