I used to study for 3 to 4 hours for a first few months of the academic year and upped the ante from December. For the last three months, I increased the study hours by 8 to 10 hours.

Also solving old question papers and tuitions in maths and science subjects helped me to secure first rank in SSLC exam in the State, a beaming Vishwajit Prakash Hegde, who scored a staggering 623 out of 625 marks, told Deccan Herald.

Vishwajit a student of Lion's English Medium School in Sirsi registered a near perfect score. Out of six subjects, Vishwajit scored centum in four subjects (Maths, Science, Social Science and Sanskrit).

“The first rank did come as  surprise for me though I was expecting to finish in top-5 bracket. I am happy that my hard work has paid off,” says Vishwajit with a chuckle.

Son of businessman Prakash Hegde and Jayashree, a homemaker, Vishwajit says that he would like to pursue engineering at one of the IITs.

“We are very happy with our son's achievement. He has made it a habit to secure first rank from Class five. He is also a good chess player and has done well at State-level tournaments during his higher secondary school days,” say beaming parents Jayashree and Prakash Hegde.

A close second
“I was hoping for good marks after I wrote the exams but I didn't expect such big numbers,” says Disha Hegde, a student of Shantisadan High School in Dharwad who has secured 622 marks-three short of perfect score.

Interestingly, Disha had featured in the semifinal round of Prajavani-Deccan Herald quiz competition. She had qualified to semis on virtue of securing second place in the Dharwad zone.

“I didn't set myself the targets and didn't believe in reading for long hours. I took tuitions in Science, Maths and English subjects. I was attentive in the class and used to revise the lessons everyday. I spend a lot of time reading on current events and GK books,” says, Disha who wants to pursue MSc and do research in physical science field.
