Comfortable fashion

It’s a hot sultry morning and you wake up feeling jaded and tired. Working up enthusiasm to tackle the long day ahead, much less dressing up for work or college, seems an onerous task. Worse, you find yourself rummaging the wardrobe for something comfortable to wear and all you are greeted with are your denims, denims and more denims.

In a scenario as this, fashion-conscious college-going youngster, Amandeep Saluja’s crib “I don’t have anything to wear” naturally evokes empathy! “Thanks to the sweltering heat, my options were really limited. With temperature hitting 42 degrees, I couldn’t possibly wear denims...the sweat would make me sick. So, I decided to pull out my long-forgotten cotton pants.” And there she was with a perfectly comfortable yet fashion-able outfit for a scorching summer day.

Fashion is known to have different paradigms for different people. For some, it’s merely about being comfortable, whereas for others it’s all about looking good, trendy and ‘with it’. There is also the category of fashionistas, who believe in not giving up on either of the above, wherein along with being fashionably attired they are also at their comfortable best. Saluja, an English Honours student from Gargi College, quite
possibly belongs to the latter category.

She tells Metrolife, “The season of summer is all about flaunting your body! It’s that time of the year when you can wear anything of your choice and style it in a way that looks cheeky and stylish. During extremely hot days, I dress up in the latest yet simple trend, and accessorise it in such a way that I look stylish and still manage to
keep my comfort factor intact!”

However, one might not always prefer palazzos due to their extremely broad/flared bottoms, which can be difficult to manage; or a skirt or shorts. But happily some of the fashion brands that bail us out of our routine ‘what-to-wear’ dilemma are Biba, Fabindia, W for Woman, Lakshita and Sabhyata amongst others. These brands offer a wide range of quirky cotton pants, harem pants and ethnic lowers that are a must have for that trendy Indo-western look.

“Shorts and skirts, despite being comfortable and airy, are not always appropriate. I have to travel in Metro everyday and then go to the Gurdwara too. Besides, I sometimes feel too conscious about my posture in a skirt. Cotton harems or khakee pants are my best friends in this scorching heat. I pair them up with a ganjee or a tank top and make the look gimmicky with a trendy headgear or maybe a scarf,” Saluja shares her fashion mantra.

Moreover, cotton is considered to be the most comfortable and desirable fabric for summers. These ethnic cotton pants in vibrant colour combinations and traditional prints come at extremely pocket-friendly rates and complement the trendy Indo-
western look.

Twenty six-year-old Kristi Sharma, who works for a startup, is also an ardent follower of the cotton pants trend. “These pants are like a saviour during summers. I can’t even think of wearing those skin tight denim jeans in this heat. They make me feel suffocated. Also, I don’t want to get all that unnecessary tan, so I avoid wearing shorts or skirts,” she tells Metrolife.

So, the next time you find your wardrobe devoid of anything comfortable and fashionable to wear, grab one of these chic pants and be the fashion icon for the day. Be cool, be elegant. The ethnic cotton pants are the haute new trend.
