The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has asked the Committee on Railways’ Restructuring headed by economist Bibek Debroy to submit its report at the earliest.

According to sources in the Railway Ministry, the committee may submit its report in June.
The committee on Thursday held talks with the trade union representatives to know their views on the “revamping” of Indian Railways.

The committee in its interim report has recommended large scale privatization in all the sectors of railways. It has also pro[posed scrapping of Railway Protection Force (RPF) and abandoning of welfare programmes.

“We have made it clear that if the committee recommends privatization in its final report, we will oppose it with all our might. We have told them that we would go on strike against it,” All India Railwaymen’s Federation General Secretary Shiv Gopal Mihra told Deccan Herald.

He, however, expressed hope that the committee might  change its stance in its final report keeping in view the opposition of the employees. He said he has asked the committee to concentrate on proposals that help ease railways’ problems like congestions on important routes, new lines and the passenger amenities. Trade unions will submit its detailed response in next ten days, he said.
