A 25-year-old woman was set on fire by her husband over a marital dispute in northeast Delhi’s Jyoti Nagar on Thursday. The couple was living separately for few months, police said.

“The woman’s husband poured kerosene on her body and set her afire using matchsticks near a crowded roundabout before fleeing the spot,” said a police officer. The incident occurred around 4 pm when Rubina had gone to meet her husband Mohammad Raees.

Onlookers doused the flames and rushed Rubina to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. “She sustained 70 per cent burns,” the officer added.

Doctors have told police that her condition is critical and the chances of her survival are minimal.

Rubina had married Raees six years ago, and they have two children. However, she had been living with her mother for the last one week.

On Thursday morning, Raees called Rubina on her mobile phone and requested her to resolve their issues and return home with him to continue their married life.

Rubina initially rejected his proposal, but upon Raees’ repeated requests, she agreed.“Raees asked Rubina to meet him near Loni roundabout,” the officer said.

Rubina reached there and found Raees standing there with a plastic bottle in his hand.

Eyewitness told police that the couple had an argument.Soon, Raees emptied the kerosene in the bottle on Rubina.

Before she could understand anything, Raees set her on fire and fled.A case under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered with Jyoti Nagar police station.

Since she died within seven years of her marriage, an SDM enquiry has also been initiated.

Several teams have been formed to nab Raees.“One of the teams has also been sent to his hometown in Uttar Pradesh as it is suspected that he may have fled there,” the officer added.
