Woman labourers, 3 cops help deliver baby in PCR van

A Delhi Police gunman, a constable and a PCR van driver helped deliver a baby girl inside a moving PCR van near central Delhi’s Rajghat on Friday.
Police said nine-month pregnant Rekha, a labourer, started having labour pains around 3 pm.

Her husband Ajay was looking for an autorickshaw when a PCR van on patrolling duty came that way.

“Ajay approached the PCR van and explained the situation. The staff immediately asked Ajay to get his wife into the vehicle,” said a police officer.
The PCR staff also pulled out a stretcher used for ferrying accident victims and made Rekha lie on it.

“The staff swung into action and also sought help from two other female labourers,” the officer added.

They proceeded towards Kasturba Hospital in central Delhi’s Chandni Chowk. But before they could reach the hospital, Rekha gave birth to a girl in the PCR van.

“The two women helped Rekha through the delivery. We assisted them,” the officer said. The mother and the newborn were soon admitted to the hospital, where both are in good health.

Rekha and Ajay hail from Uttar Pradesh, and have been working as daily wage labourers in the capital for two years.

They live with two other children in a jhuggi jhopri colony in east Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar.

A senior police officer told Deccan Herald that the staff of PCR van Oscar 27 has been recommended for reward. A cash reward will also be given to the two women who helped in the delivery.

“The PCR staff have shown a sense of responsibility and it also shows the humane face of Delhi Police,” the officer said.
