Nurses bid a teary adieu to Aruna

Nurses at the KEM Hospital at Parel here could not control their emotions.

Tears rolled down their eyes as they queued up to pay tributes to the former nurse, a rape survivor, who remained in a comatose condition close to 42 years. “She was one among us…she was our mother, she was our sister, she was our daughter,” was the common reaction of the nurses.

Most of the 800-odd nurses at the Asia’s biggest municipal hospital, had served the ward no 4, where Aruna laid for 42 years.

“We had an emotional bond with her,” said Sanjeevani. Another nurse, Suchitra said, “A part of us has gone away.” “She will be missed always. We took care of her and everyone in the hospital whether doctors, nurses, ward boys or other staff looked after her and often asked of her well being,” a nurse said.
